It
is always difficult in advance to arrive at the probable cost of
commissions in family research. We can in some cases, based on our wide
experience, indicatea likely final charge.
In
some private family cases we have to advise that it is not probable
that we as professionals will be able to complete the requested tasks
within the available budget. In these cases we
sometimes
suggest the research might be undertaken in part by the client
themselves with our ongoing guidance following a one to one
consultation.
For
private clients our terms of trade are to seek an
undated,
personal or company cheque for the agreed amount, prior to
commencement, on the understanding that it will not be
presented
for payment until we are in a position to present a report.

In
lengthy or complex investigations, often the most practical method is
to agree a series of stage payments against specific elements of the
overall tasks.
It
is always disappointing for both us and the client when following a
lengthy and genuine effort the available records fail to provide any
additional information.
This
can
be because for one reason or another the particular event was not
recorded or the records, if they ever did exist, have been lost to
history.
Our
fees are based on time and other outlay and can not be
conditional on
a ‘successful’ outcome. Much as clients might sometimes wish
we
could, we cannot ’invent’ records to substantiate a treasured
family tradition
